Hays County, Jan. 4, 2010 -- Democratic County Commissioner Jeff Barton today filed to run for County Judge.
Barton, a long-time Democratic leader and self-described “pragmatic idealist,” is completing a successful term as County Commissioner from Pct. 2, northeastern Hays County.
The County Judge acts as a sort of “chairman” for the five-member Commissioners Court, and as chief administrative officer for the county. Except for a few minor and ceremonial functions it is not a judicial post, despite the name.
Barton will make his formal announcement at a brief campaign kick-off celebration with supporters at Railroad BBQ in Kyle at 5:30 p.m. today. Free drinks will be provided.
Supporters have been urging Barton to run for months, and there has been wide-spread speculation in the regional press. While he said before Christmas that he was considering the race, Barton said he made the final decision over the holidays after consulting with friends and family.
